#119 – Terry Actual: Breaking the cycle of disgrace, anger, and despair


Terry Actual, a famend household therapist and best-selling writer, helps folks create the connections they need of their relationships. -Melancholy

  • “Melancholy runs up and down my household” says Terry (who’s “fortunately” on antidepressants himself to this present day)
  • Melancholy sometimes manifests in hurting others round you
  • “Damage folks harm folks” because the saying goes

The place most situations of violence and abuse comes from

  • Central to Terry’s work on masculinity is the translation of disgrace into grandiosity
  • Feeling lower than, insufficient, unlovable pushes folks into the “one down” of disgrace
  • From there you flip into the “one up” of grandiosity—superiority, higher than, assault, avenging angel, righteous indignation
  • This “one down/one up”—from sufferer to avenger—is central to masculinity and conventional manhood
  • What’s devilish about shifting from disgrace (harm) into grandiosity (assault) is that it makes you’re feeling higher within the brief run, nevertheless it simply creates havoc in your life
  • Terry’s father despised vulnerability as a result of he despised his personal father, who he noticed as weak
  • So when Terry’s dad perceived weak spot and vulnerability in Terry–that’s exactly when he would “assault”
  • Terry calls his father’s actions a hyper-masculine response to trauma
