Today we’re going to talk about the most important benefit of autophagy. 

What is autophagy?
Autophagy is a condition where your body is recycling old and damaged proteins in the body. I’m not talking just about hair and muscle. I’m talking about those little enzyme protein machines that do the work of the body. They’re at the cellular level, and they make body tissue. 

Benefits of autophagy:

• It decreases the risk of disease
• It will help recycle protein as a survival mechanism 
• It can help reduce pathogens in the body 
• It protects neurons and heart cells
• It gets rid of advanced glycated end products and amyloid plaquing 

**The most important benefit of autophagy is anti-cancer. 

The difference between a normal cell and a cancer cell has to do with this one thing.

A normal cell has something called mitochondrial respiration. 

A cancer cell has damage to this respiratory mechanism. When you damage this system, the cell starts to activate an ancient pathway that’s capable of fermenting glucose without the use of oxygen. 

Cancer cells are hungry for glucose. Why would anyone want to consume a lot of sugar or glucose if they have cancer?

But why is there damage to the respiratory mechanism in the mitochondria? My theory is that it has something to do with the DNA that gets damaged. I believe it gets damaged because it’s simply not protected. Autophagy may have the ability to clean up this damage in the mitochondria.

  1. Dear Dr Berg. I had very bad dental injury during an extraction and had muscle wasting. I also have none resorbtion. Can fasting help to rebuild my muscle? Especially on my face as its affecting my aging?

Love Dr. Berg and hoping he can help with this question – I know how long it takes to get into autophagy and sometimes I measure my Ketone -Glucose GKI and really think I must be there but the question is how long should one stay in autophagy? I usually fast 18-6 and am I just getting into autophagy and then eating?? or am I ok to just be in autophagy an hour or two each day? thank you!

Good morning, I would like some clarifications about the cellular autophagy process, because I am trying to enter this phase but the information I find is discordant and I am not able to distinguish the correct ones from the incorrect ones. first of all after how many hours of fasting does the cellular autophagy process start? being metabolism a constantly dynamic process what happens when I start eating again? does the autophagy process that had been triggered suddenly stop because the organism accesses energy resources easier to process? secondly I have a doubt about the relationship between body fat percentage and cellular autophagy: does this process start once the fasting hours are reached regardless of the percentage of fat that an individual possesses or first it is necessary to reach a sufficiently low body fat percentage to trigger the autophagy process? (for example I currently have a body fat percentage lower than 11%, is it low enough to trigger the metabolic process of autophagy?)
