Mitochondria are double membrane-bound cell organelles (mitochondrion, singular) that generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell’s biochemical reactions. Chemical energy produced by the mitochondria, through cellular respiration, is stored in a small molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Mitochondria contain their own DNA hence called Self replicating organelle.
Outer membrane is smooth while inner membrane is folded and form compartments called Cristae that increase surface area for biochemical reactions. Matrix is present inside the inner membrane. The space between two membranes called Inter membrane space.
