What is the Oxidative Stress or Damage Theory of Aging? Explained by Dr. James Boado | Pinoy Real

Oxidative stress refers to an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the capacity of an organism to detoxify the reactive intermediates or to repair the resulting damage. Oxidative stress, the presence of free radical species in biological systems, has been linked to many diseases, including aging. As organisms age, there is an accumulation of oxidative damage to cellular components. This damage can manifest itself in the functional decline that occurs with age, or it can be lethal, i.e., result in cell death. Because of the high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) present in mitochondria, oxidative stress is particularly important in the mitochondria. Mitochondrial oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathology of many diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer.
