It turns out the microbiome is likely the most important regulator of our overall health. There are 100 trillion microbes in you, 10 times the number of your own cells, and 100 times your DNA. Our gut bacteria regulate many of our bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, our brain function and of course, our metabolism and weight. They are critical to our long-term health.

This is why Functional Medicine almost always starts helping people treat chronic health problems by fixing their gut. In this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m joined by Dr. Steven Gundry, Dr. Todd LePine, and Dr. George Papanicolaou to talk about fixing your mitochondrial function, what foods to avoid, food sensitivities, and incorporating a whole foods diet that’s rich in polyphenols.

Dr. Steven Gundry is one of the world’s top cardiothoracic surgeons and a pioneer in nutrition, as well as medical director at The International Heart and Lung Institute Center for Restorative Medicine. He has spent the last two decades studying the microbiome and now helps patients use diet and nutrition as a key form of treatment. He is author of many New York Times bestselling books including The Plant Paradox, and The Plant Paradox Cookbook, and The Longevity Paradox: How to Die Young at a Ripe Old Age, and just released The Energy Paradox: What to Do When Your Get-Up-and-Go Has Got Up and Gone. He also is the founder of GundryMD, a line of wellness products and supplements, and host of The Dr. Gundry Podcast.

Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine, and is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. He has been practicing Functional Medicine for over 15 years focusing on Optimal Aging, Bio-Detoxification, Gastrointestinal Health, Systemic Inflammation, Autoimmune disorders and the Neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders.

Dr. George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital, Abington, Pennsylvania. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Dr. Papnicolaou established his own practice: Cornerstone Personal Health dedicated to the Functional Medicine Model. Dr. Hyman invited him to bring his expertise and twenty years of experience to the UltraWellness team. He specializes in treating the root causes of many conditions including Neurodegenerative disorders, ADHD, PANDAS/PANS, gut and hormone health.

  1. Wow love to see the 2worlds best doctors chatting together.theese guys changed my life.there advise toot me from dieing to the picture of health.thanks so mutch to the 2 of yours.

  2. Love your channel. your second guest couldn’t disagree with more. He says The best diet is plant-based. For every study that he could show me to prove this I can show him one to disprove it. Look at Virta health work. By looking at him and looking at other people on different diets you can tell the difference in body composition. There is not a damn thing wrong with animal fat that comes with animal proteins. there are multiple studies that prove that. As well as thousands and thousands of years of common sense looking at what our ancestors would have to eat. I would also argue more than bacteria producing alcohol In your Micro biome of the gut causing fatty liver. I would look more into chronically high insulin levels causing insulin resistance at the adipose tissue leading to fatty liver disease. We talk about this with full confidence not really knowing. The science is not Settled. You look at the gut microbio of thousands of carnivores they have no issues needs very little dietary fiber. There’s a lot left to learn

  3. Your functional medical treatments available band affordable to people and you just don't, I'm so sick of big pharma running the world of so called health and healing. Put your money where your mouth is. Dr. Hyman is filthy rich

  4. Gundry makes some great points, but one thing he got wrong… He is against taking wheat grass as "we are not cows". He doesn't seem to know once you turn it into juice it will heal just about anything going wrong in the body (dare I say it… up to and including cancer) Disclaimer.. I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice!! 😉 .

  5. OMG, EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED

  6. This man talks nonsense most of the time. He tries to regurgitate other people’s research. Also he has not researched deep enough. There are plenty of studies out there proving that plant fibre is not essential.

  7. I'm puzzled how lectins in tomatoes and beans can be so harmful, given that in the diets associated with longevity (e.g. the southern Italian diet), copious amounts of tomatoes and beans are consumed

  8. Bullshit about veganism. First its not a diet its a philosophy. He mean plant-based. No our canine don't serve to eat meat. Check a gorilla per exemple who eat fruits… His statement about that is just a pure not founded opinion plenty of time debunked in last years.

  9. Pomegranates are great for one’s health but what worries me is their high content of sugar
so what are we supposed to do ? How much of it is the right amount to consume to give one the desired benefits?
