Seventy-four percent of products in the grocery store are spiked with some kind of sugar. The food industry has done this on purpose to keep you coming back for more.

Here’s the thing: The liver can innately process a small amount of sugar packaged in a real food, like a piece of whole fruit. But when it comes to large amounts in our food supply—and regularly eating lots of concentrated fructose in particular—we are poisoning our liver and mitochondria, and severely disrupting our microbiome.

Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to Dr. Robert Lustig about the real dangers of eating too much sugar and how to take better care of our metabolic health.

Dr. Lustig is a neuroendocrinologist with expertise in metabolism, obesity, and nutrition. He’s the Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology and a member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF. He is also one of the leaders of the current “anti-sugar” movement that is changing the food industry, in part through his game-changing books. His latest work is Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine.

  1. Excellent. Great rapore and mutual appreciation. Great to hear Lustig relaxed at home really letting rip with his extremely broad and deep knowlege. This guy is a statesman easily sits alongside the likes of david attenborough as national treasure.

  2. 90-95% of my food is raw or steamed a bit like cruciferous veggies, so they are as they come from the ground or trees. Like my avocado, nuts, rukkola, pepper, berries, tomato, carrot, …why cook them, they are healthies and most beautiful as they are, it is a waste of time to process them, I do intermitent and prolonged fasting too and tend to eat once a day….I am also glutenfree and low carb and of course sugarfree ( I do consume some eritrit, but the desserts I make no need sugars like my peanutbutter cacao fudge and my raw banana avocado cacao icecream, they are delicious as they are as nature made the fruit 🙂

I ENDE D UP IN HOSPITAL FOR 6 MONTHS BECAUSE I COULDN'T EAT BECAUSE OF DIGESTIVE PROBLEM, NAMELY MASSIVE BLOATING, AFTER LIVING ON JUST PUREED VEGETABLES FOR 4 OF THOSE MONTHS AND FISH ONLY BE4 I WENT IN, WAS 31 KILO, 5FT 3", IN EATING DISORDER UNIT I WAS EVENTUALLY PUT ON HIGH FRUCTOSE DRINKS, I WAS ADDICTED TO THEM, BUT WAS WELL AND HEARTY AND FAT, THEN I HAD A FACELIFT, I BELIEVE THE INTRAVENOUS ANTIBIOTICS SET WHOLE NIGHTMARE OFF AGAIN, I'M GETTING BETTER ON CHINESE HERBS BUT CAN'T EAT OATS, BARLEY, BREAD, CEREAL, MILK, MOST PROCESSED FOOD, DON'T HAVE GALLBLADDER AND TAKE NEXIUM, I DO EAT QUALITY CHEESECAKE BUT HAVE BLOATING WITH! DON'T KNOW ABOUT HIS WHEAT HYPOTHESIS? OH NO FRUIT!

  4. Some ppl don’t understand what the Microbiome,as far as I understand ,your body fluids like petrol in a car they keep your body running then the waste travels through to your got then exits. Is this right???

  5. I love m y kindle also. I am Dyslexic ,it made my life so much easier because I can read. Without technology I would still be struggling and I’m in my 80th year ????

  6. Ins companies and government creating diets for us, what could possibly go wrong? So far all the government guidelines have resulted in ultimate health. I'll pass. Beef, eggs, salt and water for me.

  7. INCREDIBLE interview! Even though I was short on time, Dr. Lustig's slow, clear and concise knowledge and information drew me in. One topic I felt he was not very clear on: YOGURT. I understand we need to stay away from the sweetened varieties and opt for the unsweetened, but it seems as though the subject of Yogurt was not quite finished.
    Also he mentioned VEGAN MEATS and didn't say whether they were "bad" or "good". VEGAN MEAT is typically one of the most processed things around – not to mention GMO-laden, so his answer should have been an absolute "NO".
