TUDCA – Tauroursodeoxycholic—Bile Acid It is a bile acid that is found in trace amounts in the human body. Bile acids are compounds released from the gallbladder that help digest fats.
Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) is a compound originally approved to treat liver diseases — but recent research suggests it may have a broader application.
Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) is a naturally occurring hydrophilic bile acid that has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine. Chemically, TUDCA is a taurine conjugate of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), which in contemporary pharmacology is approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of primary biliary cholangitis. Interestingly, numerous recent studies demonstrate that mechanisms of TUDCA functioning extend beyond hepatobiliary disorders. Thus, TUDCA has been demonstrated to display potential therapeutic benefits in various models of many diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and neurodegenerative diseases, mostly due to its cytoprotective effect.
TUDCA has also been found to reduce oxidative stress, suppress apoptosis, and decrease inflammation.
Dosage:
A dose-response study of TUDCA tested doses of 500 mg, 1000 mg, and 1500 mg per day over six months, finding that there was little difference between the doses on liver marker.
1500 mg was the most effective at lowering enzyme levels while 500 mg was the most cost-effective.
In liver transplant patients, 500 mg of TUDCA taken daily for one year was not associated with any adverse effects.
In patients with PBC, 750 mg of TUDCA daily for two months was well-tolerated. Another study in patients with PBC found 1500 mg of TUDCA daily for six months was also well-tolerated.

Dr. Jawad, is it true that magnesium is important for our mood stability?
Thank you for finally explaining about Tudca! I couldn't find any good info what it does. I've been taking it for 2 months and have been feeling a bit better after gallbladder removal and feeling pain a few months later in and around liver and bile ducts and gallbladder area. Hoping for more improvements as time goes by.
Yay! Thank you SO much for answering my question about TUDCA! Excellent information you provided! I’m definitely going to give this a try, as I’ve been having some issues with my gallbladder and digestion, for a recent ultrasound showed thickened walls and distention of my GB, with coarseness of my liver (not exactly sure what the coarseness means), but no apparent stones, sludge, or blockages. The next step is a HIDA scan, but I’m a bit hesitant bc I’d rather avoid radioactive dye and radiation lol, but it would provide more info, I suppose. 🤷♀️ I’m wondering if this has any correlation to me not having a colon, which can cause some bile malabsorption, thus putting more demand on my liver and gb?
I was thinking about taking tudca on an empty stomach (to focus on the liver and gb health), and then with meals taking hcl and bile salts (to focus on digestion), but am not sure if this would be overkill. Jarrow has a product that is solely conjugated bile salts, which seems pretty potent.
Anyways, thank you again for taking the time to so thoroughly investigate the tudca!
Great information ℹ️
Bile Acid Factors by Jarrow has TUDCA in it as well as multiple other bile acids. It has been AMAZINGLY helpful with my digestive issues. I can't recommend it enough.
love the jdoc!
