Mitochondria, often termed the ‘powerhouse of the cell’, have their own unique DNA known as mt-DNA. This mitochondrial DNA is responsible for building 13 specific proteins within the organelle to aid in energy (ATP) production. Mutations in mt-DNA can lead to certain conditions including MELAS and MERRF. Additionally, mt-DNA has been a target in cardiovascular research to better understand the role of ATP production in patients suffering with cardiac conditions.
