Chapter 9 Wardlaw’s Perspectives in Nutrition, 2019 (Editors: Byrd-Bredbenner, Moe, Berning and Kelley, 11th edition)

ATP synthase is a large protein complex that enables protons to enter from the inner membrane space, fall down a slide that causes the complex to turn, and then spits out protons into the matrix. As ATP synthase spins, it brings ADP and a phosphate group in very close proximity, so close that they form a phosphate bond. The potential energy of the proton falling down its concentration gradient into the matrix is transferred into the phosphate bond of ATP.
