BioEssays: The unbroken Krebs cycle

The TCA cycle is a key metabolic pathway in mammals. It is necessary to revisit its regulation to understand why mitochondria are at the center of the scene in various diseases, with special relevance in those caused by the death of neuronal cells. This review explores the possibility that the regulation of the TCA cycle is strongly orchestrated by hormonal-like events involving signal transduction and the activities of mitochondrial protein kinases and phosphatases that, by balancing the degree of Ser-Thr phosphorylation, would regulate the activity of the enzymes of the TCA cycle.
