Electron Transport Chain (ETC)/ Respiratory chain is located in the inner mitochondrial membrane (of cristae) and is concerned with the transport of reducing equivalents ie. e- and H+ with their final oxidation into water. There are five complexes present in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Four complexes are involved in ETC and the fifth complex is for Oxidative Phosphorylation. The electron carriers present in each complexes are sequentially arranged in order of their increasing redox potentials. The flow of e- and H+ along the ETC is associated with the release of free energy.Much of this energy is conserved in the form of ATP.
Rotenone, Amobarbital, Piercidin A act on complex I and block the electron transport from NADH to COQ. Carboxin and Malonate inhibits complex II. Antimycin A inhibits complex III. Cyanide, hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide inhibits complex IV.
