Function of the Mitochondria #shorts

Learn about the function of the mitochondria. What is the function of the mitochondria? What is the function of the mitochondrion? #shorts

The mitochondria are like the powerhouse of the cell. It uses respiration and chemical energy to do so.

Mitochondria are membrane-bound cell organelles (mitochondrion, singular) that generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell’s biochemical reactions. Chemical energy produced by the mitochondria is stored in a small molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

The most prominent roles of mitochondria are to produce the energy currency of the cell, ATP (i.e., phosphorylation of ADP), through respiration, and to regulate cellular metabolism.

Production of ATP. Perhaps the most well-known role of mitochondria is the production of ATP, the energy currency of cells. The main job of mitochondria is to perform cellular respiration. This means it takes in nutrients from the cell, breaks them down, and turns them into energy.
