Function of Mitochondria | Mitochondrion functions
According to endosymbiotic theory, mitochondria are supposed to have evolved in eukaryotes from endosymbiotic association of purple photosynthetic bacteria about 1.5 x 10 9 years ago.
The main function of mitochondria are –
Essential for aerobic metabolism
Energy production through oxidative phosphorylation
Involved in metabolic pathway like beta oxidation, kreb’s cycle, synthesis of iron-sulphur cluster etc.
Maintain, replicate and transcribe their own DNA
Impart & assembly of proteins
Remodeling of the mitochondrial network
Some additional role are Apoptosis and Calcium homeostasis
