The final topic in Bioenergetics pertains to the notion of Fermentation. Med School EU analyzes what occurs to the Pyruvate molecules after glycolysis when oxygen is not available for the cell. Typically, the molecules remain in the cytosol and undergo lactate or alcohol fermentation, depending on the type of organism. Animals undergo lactate fermentation, whereas micro-organisms undergo alcohol fermentation. Furthermore, we discuss the purpose of this process and why it is so important for cellular function.
