Men exposed to industrial air pollution have mitochondrial DNA cuts in sperm

The researchers compared the long spectrum of removal of sperm mitochondria in two seasons with various levels of air pollution.

In eukaryotic cells, mitochondria produce the energy used for all cellular functions. Two metabolic pathways that affect energy production include oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis. All cells consist of various mitochondria, which range from several hundred to thousands per cell. Each mitochondria contains many copies of mitochondrial DNA. Background

Human mitochondrial circular DNA contains 37 genes that encode thirteen proteins, two ribonucleic acids of ribosomes, and 32 RNA transfers. Changes in the order of MTDNA can affect mitochondrial function which in turn causes various neuromusccular, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and neurodegenerative diseases. Changes in MTDNA can also cause skin disorders, diabetes, cancer, and aging. Gene removal can cause the MTDNA sequence to change and, as a result, has been associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. The Mitobreak database consists of around 1,300 deletion that affects 3-16,055 mitochondrial -base pairs. The majority of this deletion was found in the main bow of MTDNA. In particular, MTDNA abnormalities can cause heteroplasm. In sperm, mitochondria can be found around the middle of the sperm tail. In sperm, mitochondria have an important role in sperm motility, capacitation, hyperactivation, and acrosome reactions. Changes in MTDNA sperm and mitochondrial membranes have been associated with male infertility. Many general mtdna removal has been reported in men with poor sperm motility. Interestingly, the status of sperm MTDNA can be used as a molecular biomarker for environmental exposure and oxidative stress. In the Czech Republic, the Ostrava industry agglomeration is a very polluted area that contains high concentrations of industry, local heater, coke oven, and transportation system. During winter, cross -border pollutant transmission from neighboring industrial areas occurred in Poland. Thus, air pollution in this area shows seasonal changes with increased particle circulation and gas contaminants, especially benzene and nitro oxide. Compared to the summer months, the level of air pollution increases in winter. Previously, researchers analyzed cement samples obtained from police in the city of Ostrava during spring and winter. For this purpose, improvement
