Mitochondria's role in heart failure inspires therapy ideas

A new National Institutes of Health report outlines how expanding research on mitochondria could result in new ways of treating heart failure. The latest research shows that this organelle plays more roles in our cells than previously thought. Tapping into this new knowledge could offer ideas for diagnostics, biomarkers, and better therapeutics.

Dr. Rong Tian, director of the Mitochondria and Metabolism Center and UW Medicine, and Dr. Wilson Colucci of the Cardiovascular Center at Boston Medical and a professor at Boston University School of Medicine co-chaired the working group on “Unlocking the Secrets of Mitochondria in the Cardiovascular System: Path to a Cure in Heart Failure.” Tian explains these new directions in mitochondrial medicine.
