Peroxisomes, Glyoxisomes

Peroxisomes | Glyoxysomes
Peroxisomes are the single membrane bound organelle present in all eukaryotes. Peroxisome was discovered by Chritian de Duve in 1965. The diameter of peroxisome is between 0.5 – 1 µm. Peroxisomes lack DNA and ribosomes.
Like mitochondria, peroxisomes contain several oxidases – enzymes that use molecular oxygen to oxidize organic acids. For example –
Oxalic acid = H202 + C02
Similarly, when excess H202 accumulates in the cell, catalase converts it to water and oxygen –
2H202 = 2H20 + O2
(Note: kindly ignore the typing mistake related to the above reaction written on white board in video)
Glyoxysome is a specialized form of peroxisome present in some plant cells. Glyoxysomes contain the enzymes of the glyoxylate cycle – which help to convert stored lipid into carbohydrates.
