Protective effects of Hericium Erinaceus Mushroom againstOxidative Stress in Friedreich’s Ataxia

Episode 40: Protective effects of Hericium Erinaceus Mushroom againstOxidative Stress in Friedreich’s Ataxia

Synopsis:
Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) is a progressive neuromuscular disorder caused by frataxin deficiency, a mitochondrial protein. We observed that exogenous antioxidants derived from H. erinaceus could play a key role in reinforcing the endogenous antioxidant defence system to combat oxidative stress in a cellular model of FRDA. Additionally, restoration of mitochondrial function and biogenesis attenuated apoptotic cell death. Therefore, H. erinaceus potentially mitigates oxidative stress in FRDA.
