Diabetic Retinopathy: A Holistic Approach for Eye Health

I received a question from Jay, who is dealing with type 2 diabetes and diabetic retinopathy. Jay, I have some suggestions that may help you on your journey. Let’s dive in.

First and foremost, I highly recommend finding a functional medicine doctor who can guide you through a ketogenic diet. This high-fat, low-carb, and adequate-protein diet has shown promise in managing diabetes. However, it’s important to work closely with a professional in this area.

Now, let’s talk about supporting your eye health. There are several beneficial ingredients I want to mention. Starting with B vitamins, B12 is essential, and folic acid has been found to support retinal vessels. Taking a full-spectrum B complex can be helpful. Another aspect to consider is the health of your mitochondria, the cellular energy producers. CoQ10 can support mitochondrial health. I also recommend incorporating the master antioxidant glutathione, taurine (an amino acid), and antioxidants like lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene for retinal health.

To promote blood vessel health in the retina, two additional ingredients are grape seed extract and the DHA component of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s not only have anti-inflammatory properties but also support retinal, optic nerve, and brain health. Lastly, resveratrol is another valuable compound to consider.

When it comes to protecting your retina, I suggest using a blue-blocking filter for all your screen time. Additionally, aim to spend around 30 minutes outdoors in natural sunlight to boost your vitamin D levels. Lastly, don’t forget to relax your eyes through regular eye exercises. One exercise I love is called the N Palm, which you can find on my website. It’s incredibly relaxing and beneficial. Incorporate it into your routine several times a day.

He holds a Bachelor of Science from Pennsylvania State University, Doctor of Optometry from Pennsylvania College, and did his postdoctoral work at the Gesell Institute in collaboration with Yale University. He has been awarded The Special Awards for Service from the Behavioral Optometrists in Mexico for his innovative and holistic work with children.

His protocols take a proactive, rather than reactive, approach to health and wellness. He understands and treats the body as one integrated system rather than a collection of independent organs in order to identify and address the root causes of disease. His whole health protocols improve vision and wellness by healing the mind-body-spirit through nutritional protocols, vision therapy, and self-care techniques. This views each person as genetically and biochemically unique and enables the individual to make lifelong improvements to their well-being.
