About this lecture:
Our laboratory seeks to understand how protein homeostasis and the communication between tissues regulate stem cell function, organismal aging, and the onset of age-related neurodegenerative diseases to uncover mechanisms of regeneration and healthspan extension. To address this ambitious task, we use an innovative approach that combines state-of-the-art proteomics, human stem cell research, iPSC-disease modelling and genetics in the model organism C. elegans.
Research background:
Prof. Dr. David Vilchez is a Research Group Leader at the CECAD Research Center and a Principal Investigator at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Cologne. His laboratory is focused on defining the mechanisms underlying protein homeostasis (proteostasis) regulation in stem cells. The final goal is to determine whether intervention of these proteostasis mechanisms slow down ageing and protect from the symptoms associated with age-related pathologies. Prof. Vilchez and his coworkers aim to define the mechanisms that maintain proteostasis in stem cells. Ultimately, they hope to apply this knowledge for the discovery of pharmaceutical targets to ameliorate Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or Huntington’s disease.
