Geroscience Approaches to Health: New Therapies for Mitochondrial Disorders

Geroscience studies how biological aging causes and affects chronic age-related diseases and conditions with the goal to improve quality of life in the elderly. Fundamental biological processes (codified in 9 “hallmarks” of aging) drive both age-dependent and independent disorders. Thus, it could be argued that the biology of aging equates with the biology of health. Following this premise, this lecture explores how geroscience can help us understand and develop novel therapies for pediatric mitochondrial disorders, with a particular focus on the antidiabetic drug acarbose and its effects on the intestinal microbiome.
