Parasite Eve’s DEEPLY Unwell Evolution in Review

looks like mitochondria’s back on the menu boys

*full series spoilers btw*

Where to start – Parasite Eve was voted for by patrons months ago, so I’m finally covering it, and right after Vagrant Story. That’s wild – they’re the only 2 games I know that play somewhat like each other. [un]fortunately for me, the two sequel entries diverge drastically in genre. What happens when you blast a series back to back when they’re offering 3 different gameplay frameworks?

I don’t rank games ever, but the first entry is strongest to me – just unique and interesting enough to be worth the play. The sequel is largely derivative of resident evil, though not without its own quirks and rpg mechanics, but it’s an interesting play specifically for asking for that sort of controller mastery in a series that hardly cared prior, and presumably chasing trends. Third birthday is a video game you can play, and spits directly at fans in the strangest twist yet conceived.

If you’re looking for more classic PSX title coverage, I did Vagrant Story recently, Valkyrie Profile too, and Chrono Cross years ago. If you’re look for rpgs in general, check my work on Xenoblade.
