Webinar: Enduring endurance – exercise through the ages with Emma Beswick

A couple of decades ago thirty was the new twenty in endurance sports… Now, in the 2020s, it’s not unusual to see athletes in their mid thirties, or even forties at the top of their game, and giving the youngsters a run for their money. This webinar will explore how genes, nutrients and physical activity impact mitochondrial physiology and function: what we can learn from research into longevity, healthspan and genomics to support athletes to continue to optimise training, recovery and performance as they age.

Emma will discuss the interplay between genes involved in DNA repair (PARP1) and energy sensing, including Sirtuins and PPARs, and their competition for the same nutrient resources. She will take a deep dive into genes and antioxidant regulation, oxidative stress and inflammation, plus impacts on mitochondrial function (dysfunction) and, subsequently, on physical activity and performance.

Although we can’t change our DNA, understanding genetic predispositions can enable personalised support for athletes at every level to perform better for longer.
