Mitochondria inherited maternally by removing paternal mitochondria in the zygote during fertilization which prevents mitochondrial mutation called heteroplasmy.
Mitochondria provides an important energy compound called ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) that empowers the brain system including neuronal communication. Mitochondria also controls calcium concentration for neuronal communication.
