Chesapeake Genetic Study: Preliminary Results

In June 2019, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Anthropology, partnered with the St Mary’s County Historical Society to collect DNA samples from approximately 150 Southern Maryland residents who could trace their ancestry in the Chesapeake region back to the 17th century.

Through DNA analysis, the researchers seek to gain a better understanding of the ancestry of contemporary African and European individuals and their possible kinship to comparative populations.

At this meeting, the researchers presented their methodologies and the results to date of their investigation to study participants and the general public.
