How to stay young with Mitochondrial Biogenesis

If we want to stay young, we need to look after our organs. Every cell in our organs contain something called mitochondria. These organelles are known as the ‘power stations’ of of our cells – they produce the energy (known as ATP) we use from everything from thinking to blinking.

If we want young, heathy organs, we need young and healthy mitochondria! The key is to get rid of the old ones and make new ones. Our bodies do this naturally and this is called mitochondrial biogenesis.

Unfortunately, as we get older our ability to do this diminishes…BUT..the good news is we can cheat 🙂 We all have a gene called PGC1-alpha which is the master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis and we can activate this gene to make MORE mitochondria whenever we want!

This is done by stressing the body…just enough. Stressing the body enough to create a net benefit is called hormesis. Hormesis is a biological phenomenon whereby a beneficial effect (improved health, stress tolerance, growth or longevity) results from exposure to low doses of an agent that is otherwise toxic or lethal when given at higher doses. If you were to exercise non stop, day after day, you would die!

The four key ways to do this are cold stress, heat stress, exercise and fasting. How do you do this? Take a cold shower, go to the sauna, hit the gym and skip dinner!
